The Bridge of Salt and Regret

Every century, the Salt-Bridge demanded a soul to maintain its span over the void. Kaelen, a disgraced knight, volunteered to save a village girl chosen as sacrifice. As he stepped onto the shimmering expanse, memories flooded him—not his own, but the accumulated regrets of all prior sacrifices. He saw wars started by petty lies, lovers betrayed, children abandoned. The bridge wasn’t sustained by death, but by remorse. Kaelen’s own shame—fleeing battle—paled in comparison. The bridge absorbed him, but instead of vanishing, it solidified into crystal, finally satisfied. Villagers crossed freely, unaware Kaelen’s face was now etched in its shimmering surface.
